Giving of Yourself: The Spirit of Philanthropy

In a world that often emphasizes the importance of possessions and personal success, the timeless saying “It is better to give than to receive” stands as a poignant reminder of the essence of the human condition. Giving of yourself is an essential part of EAC Network’s foundation. As a New York social services nonprofit, our organization was built to bring advantages to those who give and those who need to receive. The profound joy, purpose, and self-discovery obtained through volunteering and donating often empowers and uplifts our dedicated staff and volunteers just as much as the New Yorkers on the receiving end.

Volunteer work is proven to reduce stress and increase positive, relaxed feelings by releasing dopamine, providing a sense of purpose, teaching valuable skills, and nurturing new and existing relationships, according to a 2023 study published by the Mayo Clinic.

The “Trickle-Down” Effect

Giving of yourself extends far beyond the immediate recipients, creating a wave of positive change that touches and transforms the lives of countless individuals and communities. When you take the time to help someone in need and impact their life, the recipient—who once may have questioned their place in society—feels noticed, supported, and cared for by humanity.

Receiving such an act of kindness can provide pride and self-respect, inspire continued work toward recovery, and enhance self-improvement. A strong sense of empowerment and gratitude results in the desire to give back and pay it forward. Supporting your fellow human doesn’t always mean donating dollars. Oftentimes, motivating through a shared experience, lending time, and focusing much-needed attention is even more effective. In April 2023, the Value of Volunteer Time report by Independent Sector and the Do Good Institute, revealed that the 2023 monetary value of a volunteer hour is estimated to be $31.80, which is a 6.2% increase from 2021 to 2022 and more than double New York’s minimum hourly wage.

Giving of Yourself: At the Core of EAC Network’s Mission

EAC Network is a nonprofit social service agency that empowers, assists, and cares for over 65,000 New Yorkers in need each year—ranging from the East End to Rockland County and all five boroughs in between. Our professional staff and volunteers exemplify the spirit of selflessness by working tirelessly to make a positive impact.

With over 50 years of dedicated efforts, services, and programs, EAC Network has aided individuals and communities facing challenges and inspired others to join the collective effort and make a difference. We know what our combined support can accomplish when, together, we champion those in crisis.

There is No Better Gift You Can Give

The holiday season and the beginning of a new year are excellent opportunities to embrace the spirit of giving and keep it shining throughout 2024. Below, we’ve included some great ideas for helping your fellow New Yorkers:

Feed the Hungry

Volunteer for Meals on Wheels and help EAC feed over 50% of Nassau County’s hungry seniors. Click here to contact the Program Director, today.

Donate to a Toy Drive

Contribute to a toy drive and bring joy to underprivileged children. A new toy today leaves a lasting impact on tomorrow and beyond. Click here to inquire about one of our many toy drives throughout the year or to hold your own.

Organize or Contribute to a Clothing Drive

Clean out your closet and encourage others to do the same. Collect gently used clothing and donate it to local charities or shelters to provide warmth to those without. Keep in mind that EAC’s program participants always need job interview attire for both men and women. Contact EAC Network and find out about the drop-off location closest to you.

Offer Companionship to Seniors

Many seniors are lonely. Visit a local nursing home or senior center, engage in conversations, play games, or spend time with them to bring smiles and companionship. EAC Network runs four senior centers throughout Long Island that need your time.

Write Letters to Troops

Show appreciation for the military by writing letters or sending care packages to deployed troops. Express gratitude for their service and bring a piece of home to those away during the holidays.

Assist a Local Nonprofit

Nonprofits like EAC Network always seek individuals willing to volunteer time, effort, or money. That’s how we bring our critical services and programs to the New York region.

Improve your mental health and strengthen your sense of purpose through volunteering and helping others. At EAC Network there are so many Ways to Get Involved.
