Program Description
The Problem:
Children who are abused or neglected are at greater risk for low self-esteem and/or self-control, increased aggression and violence, mental health and/or social issues, and they are more likely to abuse or neglect their own children.
Our Solution:
Prevent child abuse and limit negative outcomes by utilizing parenting best practices and by promoting protective factors that include increasing parent resilience, educating parents on child development and the social/emotional competence of children, creating social connections, and providing concrete support in times of need.
How We Do it:
Parent education is essential to decrease negative child outcomes and to increase family strengths. To maximize program effectiveness, we use evidence-based curricula and tools such as Common Sense Parenting and Bright Beginnings to provide a strong educational foundation for parents and to encourage them to redefine and strengthen their relationships with their children. Our training strategies promote positive family interaction, give parents the opportunity to practice skills in class, teach emotional communication skills, raise awareness of children’s development, and facilitate healthy bonding.
How You Can Help:
LIPI seeks an artist to volunteer their time and talents to draw/create posters of classic children’s songs for our Bright Beginnings class. To volunteer your artistic services, please contact Kathryn Cannino at (631) 737-9384. To support LIPI with a gift, click here or call (516) 539-0150 x117.
The Outcomes of LIPI
In 2016 alone, LIPI provided parent education services to 583 parents, impacting 1,191 children.
The parenting skills gained in our classes have an important impact on children and promote protective factors and the future well-being that will continue a cycle of positive and effective parenting skills for generations to come.
