The Children’s Center at Cohalan Court
The Suffolk County Children’s Center at Cohalan Court is a free program, which is funded by the Suffolk County Legislature and private donations. For parents who must bring children with them to court, it is a positive alternative to crowded courtrooms and waiting areas. The Children’s Center provides quality drop-in child care at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.
The center is a supervised environment where children can feel safe while their caregivers are attending to courtroom business. The program gives children an engaging environment, which also promotes literacy. Each day during snack time, children are read a story. At the end of the day, every child receives a book to take home with them.
The center also has a wide variety of toys and play centers where children can engage in arts and crafts, and other interactive activities, like educational computer games. In addition, parents can receive referrals for other social services, such as:
- Head Start
- Childcare
- Legal assistance
- Domestic violence programs
- Parenting classes
The Suffolk County Children’s Center, which is staffed by trained, professional childcare providers and volunteers, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4:40 p.m.
