Program Description
The Problem:
Some families have an inability to meet regulatory requirements and to maintain compliance with the TANF program. In such cases the recipients are sanctioned, which results in a loss of financial benefits. These individuals may also be at risk of losing additional services such as housing, transportation, and childcare subsidies.
Our Solution:
Decrease the number of TANF clients in sanction status by identifying barriers that may hinder compliance and by educating individuals on TANF program requirements.
How We Do it:
Through a collaborative effort with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Sanctions Intervention Case Managers conduct in-person interviews with clients to create an individual needs assessment. They address employment, drug/alcohol, child support, and medical documentation sanctions. With a strong emphasis on the development and maintenance of family self-sufficiency, they educate clients on the roles and responsibilities within the TANF program and refer them to community resources that may help them achieve compliance.
How You Can Help:
Sanctions Intervention seeks a bookcase, children’s books, crayons, and coloring books to occupy children during their parents’ appointments. To support Sanctions Intervention with a gift, click here or call (516) 539-0150 x117.
The Outcomes of Sanctions Intervention
90%
Sanctions Intervention, on average each year, successfully engages more than 90% of referred individuals into achieving full compliance and restoring their benefits.
