Program Description

The Problem:

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1-12. Every day, approximately 19 children are treated in New York State hospitals for motor vehicle injuries. Most 8-12 year-olds seriously injured or killed in car crashes were not wearing seat belts, and more than 90% of child safety seats are installed improperly.

Our Solution:

Educate the community on passenger safety and work with parents and child care providers to promote effective and appropriate use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts in order to prevent injuries to children.

How We Do it:

Safe Start promotes the safety of all occupants riding in motor vehicles in order to reduce the number of children riding unrestrained. Thus, a major component is community outreach and subsequently, conducting educational workshops. Safe Start hosts permanent fitting stations in Nassau and Suffolk Counties that offer safety seat inspections by certified technicians. The program’s van offers a mobile fitting station to provide these services to parents in need at unlimited locations. In addition, complimentary child safety restraints are provided to clients most in need.

How You Can Help:

Safe Start seeks funding or pro bono service to build a heated and air conditioned garage to allow additional seat checks to be conducted during inclement weather. To support Safe Start with a gift, click here.

What People Say About Safe Start

I am expecting my first child any minute now and the idea that I had yet to install a car seat properly crossed my mind and I started to panic. The Safe Start staff not only showed me how to properly install my car seat, but they didn’t want me to leave until I felt comfortable doing it myself. As I drove away I took a deep breath and realized how lucky I was to learn about the program when I did. I would encourage all parents to make the call as you will learn more safety tips than you realize.

The Safe Start Program is an AMAZING resource! At 7 1/2 months my son was close to outgrowing his infant seat and my husband and I were struggling with properly and safely installing the convertible car seat. After some phone calls and internet searching I found EAC Network’s Safe Start and had an appointment quickly. My certified technician was Angela and she was great…thorough, informative, and friendly! I will definitely be spreading the word about the program!
