2 Weatherization Assistance Programs Bridging the Gap During Winter

weatherization assistance programs

Winter in New York can be long and hard, especially for low-income Nassau County families. Due to the high cost of energy, some get stuck between a rock and hard place when it gets cold. A lack of resources then forces tough choices, like staying warm or having enough to eat. To address this pervasive problem, EAC Network’s two weatherization assistance programs (HEAT and WRAP) deliver direct support services that help members of our community stay in their homes and out of costly institutional care.

How HEAP and WRAP Increase Access to Energy Efficiency

With the rising cost of living in Nassau County, EAC Network’s weatherization assistance programs are more vital than ever. By increasing access to essential services, the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and the Weatherization Referral and Packing Program (WRAP) improves the quality of life for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)

HEAP offers financial assistance to help low-income individuals pay home heating expenses and become more energy efficient to reduce future costs.

HEAP staff members develop individualized plans for those in the program based upon each homeowner’s needs and resources. Qualifying families then receive coordinated assistance with obtaining improvements or replacements to doors, windows, boilers, and more that will help reduce energy costs not only this winter but next winter, too.

The Weatherization Referral and Packaging Program (WRAP)

WRAP is available to seniors who qualify for HEAP. It provides comprehensive weatherization services and energy conservation education to reduce heating costs and make homes more energy efficient. The program aims to assist and encourage seniors to stay in their homes rather than leave to live in more costly institutional care.

WRAP serves low-income individuals over 60 years old who typically have decreased access to necessary services. As part of the program, a senior’s home will receive an energy audit to determine what services might be needed, such as insulation, caulking, or window repair, to address related social, health, or safety problems. Seniors also may receive referrals to appropriate services if necessary.

Why Weatherization Assistance Programs Are So Vital

As we approach the first frost, EAC Network’s HEAP and WRAP programs are making a major difference in the lives of at-risk neighbors in your own community. In a very real way, these services help prevent vulnerable Nassau County residents from being forced to make unfortunate choices that could negatively impact their quality of life.
