The Inhumane Reality Behind Human Trafficking Statistics

image of an orange handprint nexto text that reads, world day against trafficking persons

Later this month, we recognize World Day Against Trafficking in Persons; we stand in solidarity with victims of human trafficking around the world. There are more people trapped in slavery as a result of human trafficking than at any other time in history. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), there are an estimated 49 million victims of modern slavery worldwide, with 12 million of them being children. These human trafficking statistics are heinous and not only shatter lives but also support a culture of exploitation, fear, and violence.

Human Trafficking Statistics that Demand Attention

As we prepare to mark this day, it is crucial to acknowledge the alarming statistics associated with trafficking. Here are some staggering facts provided by Sunrise For Children.org and The Exodus Road:

  • Every minute, 2 people are trafficked across international borders
  • 1 million children are exploited in the global sex trade every year
  • The average age of a child being trafficked is just 13 years old
  • Human trafficking is a 150-billion-dollar criminal industry
  • 43% of victims are in forced labor
  • 13% are being exploited in the commercial sex trade
  • 44% are in forced marriages

The Threats are Real: Constant Vigilance is Necessary

Traffickers use tactics such as false promises, manipulation, and violence to recruit and control their victims, often targeting vulnerable portions of the population such as children, women, and migrants. They will also target individuals who are withdrawn from society, have mental health issues, and are otherwise vulnerable to their schemes. The consequences of human trafficking are severe and long-lasting, causing irreversible physical and emotional trauma, psychological distress, and even death. It is crucial to take this threat seriously and ensure you and your loved ones stay cautious.

Awareness for Safety and Support

We must raise awareness about human trafficking to prevent it from occurring and to support survivors in their journey towards healing and recovery. By educating ourselves about the signs of trafficking, reporting suspicious activity, and advocating for policies and laws that protect the rights of victims, we can work together to eradicate this detestable crime and ensure that everyone can live a life free from exploitation.

EAC Network Provides Refuge

One way to raise awareness about human trafficking is through education, prevention, and support programs like EAC Network’s Safe Harbour Program. This initiative provides vital support and advocacy services to children who have already been sexually exploited or are at risk of being victimized in Suffolk County.

The Safe Harbor Program aims to empower these young individuals with the skills, and resources necessary to overcome their experiences and build a safe, healthy, and fulfilling life. With the help of community outreach, we can assist these individuals at our Suffolk County Child Advocacy Center in the following ways:

  • Case management
  • Vocational counseling
  • Potential police intervention
  • Community Education
  • Medical and mental health assessments
  • Referrals for residential placement, therapy, and counseling

A Global Threat We All Must be Aware Of

Awareness, prevention, and prosecution are the best ways to reduce human trafficking statistics. If you or someone you know has experienced human trafficking or feels someone may be in trouble or is a victim, help is available.
