Local Law Community Raises Over $28,000 for Kids Served at Cohalan Court

Judge C. Randall Hinrichs, Suffolk County District Administrative Judge, and Cohalan Cares for Kids honoree Sarah Jane LaCova, Suffolk County Bar Association Executive Director at EAC Network’s Cohalan Cares for Kids event where over $28,000 was raised in support of the Suffolk County Children’s Center at Cohalan Court.

Hauppauge, NY – March 16, 2018 – Earlier this month, Nassau and Suffolk-based lawyers, judges, business owners, and community members gathered at the Suffolk County Bar Association (SCBA) for the 7th Annual Cohalan Cares for Kids event. Together they raised over $28,000 in support of local human service nonprofit EAC Network’s Suffolk County Children’s Center at Cohalan Court, which provides a safe space where children engage in fun and educational activities while their parents or guardians attend to court business.

SCBA Executive Director Sarah Jane LaCova was honored for her dedicated support of the Center and the children it serves. When funding for the Center was cut seven years ago, Ms. LaCova and other members of the law community came together with EAC Network and initiated the Cohalan Cares for Kids fundraiser at the SCBA to help fund the Center’s operations. Throughout the year, Ms. LaCova continuously finds ways to help families at the Center, be it through donation drives or even coordinating the support of the Suffolk Bar Charity Foundation.

“We are incredibly grateful to Jane for all that she has done for our Children’s Center over the years,” said Andrea Ramos-Topper, Division Director of Children & Youth Services at EAC Network. “It was very special for us to honor her and recognize her for her leadership on the Cohalan Cares for Kids committee as well as her support of the Center all year long.”

The Original Fireside Caterers, Brick House Brewery, and The Little Flower Shop were also recognized for their continued in-kind support of Cohalan Cares for Kids, donating the event’s food, beverages, and centerpieces.

The Children’s Center offers an alternative to crowded courtrooms and waiting areas and enables parents with young children to attend to their court business. Rather than witnessing court cases, children are cared for by trained, professional childcare providers and volunteers and engage in supervised free play, arts & crafts, and age-appropriate computer games. They also have access to a library of children’s books, one of which they are given to take home each time they attend the Center – whether it’s once or one hundred times.
