EAC Network’s LIDRC Conducts Virtual Peer Mediation Swearing-In Ceremony

EAC Network’s LIDRC Conducts Virtual Peer Mediation Swearing-In Ceremony

On January 29, 2021, EAC Network’s Long Island Dispute Resolution Center (LIDRC) conducted a virtual ‘Peer Mediation Swearing-In’ ceremony for 16 Peer Mediators from the Alverta B. Gray Schultz (ABGS) Middle School in Hempstead, NY. These youth were successfully trained by Gregg Scheiner from EAC Network’s LIDRC, and were sworn-in by the Honorable Joy Watson. In attendance were many honored guests including Principal Carey Gray, from ABGS Middle School, as well as Ms. Theresa Drye from the Nassau County Office of Youth Services. Several parents attended the swearing-in ceremony through Zoom, facilitated by Mr. Dorian Segure – who is the Faculty Advisor of the Peer Mediation club the Law Club advisor at ABGS Middle School, the Scout Master for the school. The year 2021 marks over a decade of collaborative partnerships between EAC Network’s LIDRC, ABGS Middle School, and Judge Joy Watson. As a result of using our Peer Mediation Process, conflict has been reduced within the community.

Peer mediation programs are a part of conflict resolution and violence prevention efforts within schools throughout the United States. Peer mediation programming also offers skills and strategies to students and teachers for resolving conflicts peacefully and productively. This encourages and enables students to take responsibility for their conflicts. School Peer Mediation programs also provide a forum for students to resolve disputes among themselves without staff intervention. Through the mediation process, students often identify underlying issues they might not have otherwise recognized as the root of the conflict. The positive results of active peer mediation programs include less physical fighting, truancy, and suspensions in the school. When combined with conflict resolution and communication skills training throughout the school, peer mediation programs result in an improved school climate. School troublemakers can become school peacemakers.

Gregg Scheiner has been providing peer mediation, conflict resolution, and restorative practices training on behalf of LIDRC for years. He is a Certified Mediator through EAC Network, and a Licensed Circles and Restorative Practices Trainer through the International Institute for Restorative Practices. Gregg holds a Master of Science in Restorative Practices through IIRP.edu.
