The 9th Annual Cohalan Cares for Kids, benefiting EAC Network’s Suffolk County Children’s Center at Cohalan Court, is just a few weeks away! Come out to the Suffolk County Bar Association for a terrific evening of food, wine, music, and prizes in support of a vital community resource.

A Safe, Convenient Childcare Solution

At the Suffolk County Children’s Center at Cohalan Court, children aged six weeks to 12 years are provided with a safe and enriching environment while their parents or guardians attend to legal matters. Children are provided nutritious snacks and presented with educational models that promote literacy and imaginative play. At the end of their visit, each child leaves with a book. If necessary, eligible families are linked up with support services, such as shelters, food pantries, healthcare, Head Start, additional childcare, legal assistance, domestic violence programs, parenting classes, and more.

In 2018, the Children’s Center served 1,540 children from over 500 families, who may not otherwise have had access to quality childcare and which enables them to attend to court business worry-free.

Cohalan Cares About Children

The Children’s Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the John P. Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. At the Children’s Center, every child is cared for by trained, professional childcare providers and volunteers.

The Center provides a variety of toys and play sets to choose from, including:

  • Art and crafts
  • Interactive activities
  • Educational computer games

Children in the program also learn valuable life skills, like sharing and getting along with others.

With the support from the Suffolk County legal community, EAC Network has hosted a wide range of events, including distributing backpacks filled with school supplies to young learners and an adopt-a-family program, which distributes food baskets to families in the community.

EAC Network’s team of children and youth services professionals takes pride in the work they do at the Children’s Center knowing that the services bring joy to children and provide relief to their parents.

A Focus on Childhood Literacy

One of the Children’s Center’s primary goals is to promote literacy.

Every day, children are read a story during snack time. To help foster a love of reading, each child receives a book to take home at the end of the day, whether they attend the Children’s Center once or 100 times, and parents are encouraged to read to their children. Often, the book a child receives from the Center is the first book they’ve ever owned.

Cohalan Cares for Kids provides books to children.
