. . . FOR FOSTER BOYS AND GIRLS
Children in the foster care system travel between guardians with little to no possessions and often carry their bare necessities in plastic trash bags. We unfortunately see the heartbreaking circumstances of these children in our Chance to Advance and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) programs, which reduce risk factors for youth in foster care by providing volunteer mentors and educational activities. Every child deserves love and dignity. Luckily, they have real life heroes who are coming to their aid.
Francine E. Love of Love Law Firm, PLLC, a Community Partner, saw this tragedy first-hand when her two adopted nieces arrived with their belongings in trash bags. She did not want other children to have the same experience and approached us with the idea to collect necessary toiletries and duffel bags for the kids.
“Caring about children in foster care is personal for me: two of my nieces were adopted from the system. They are both amazing young women who have so much to offer our family and the world,” said Francine. “This drive is just one way of letting other children currently in foster care know that there are so many people who care about them; they too are valuable. These bags are a tangible reminder that these children, and their possessions, are not disposable. And the bags contain a few comforts and necessities of home while they are away.”
Francine collected the duffel bags for months and inspired others to help, as well. Stony Brook University’s Student Nurses’ Association learned about the drive and refused to stand by and do nothing. They gathered and stuffed over 20 duffel bags for the cause. Thanks to both large contributions, almost 100 children will receive duffel bags filled with essentials, toys, and games.
